Brazilian straightening or chemical relaxing: what is the difference? Image

Brazilian straightening or chemical relaxing: what is the difference?

Author: Paris Liss Expert

Brazilian straightening temporarily controls and relaxes the hair, whereas chemical relaxing permanently transforms its structure. The former generally aims to provide flexibility, shine and frizz reduction; the latter seeks a much more pronounced, permanent straightening effect on the treated areas.

How does Brazilian straightening work?

Brazilian straightening deposits a conditioning and smoothing formula that is activated by heat. Depending on the product, it reduces volume, makes blow-drying easier and relaxes the curl to varying degrees. Its effects gradually fade with washing and regrowth.

How does chemical relaxing work?

Chemical relaxing alters the internal structure of the hair to produce a straight result. The treated lengths do not regain their natural texture: only new growth retains the original texture. This requires targeted touch-ups and great care to avoid overlapping applications.

The key differences

Criterion Brazilian straightening Chemical relaxing
Transformation Temporary and gradual Permanent on treated areas
Objective Manageability, flexibility and frizz control Significantly straighter hair
Curls May remain visible or be relaxed Are significantly transformed
Regrowth Generally a softer transition A more noticeable line of demarcation
Touch-ups According to the gradual fading of the result On the roots only

Which option is best for Afro-textured or coily hair?

The right choice depends on the desired result. If you want to retain some of your texture, make styling easier and reduce frizz, a suitable straightening treatment may be appropriate. If you want a very straight, long-lasting change, chemical relaxing is more suited to this objective, but it requires careful monitoring of regrowth and the condition of the hair fibre.

Very dense hair is not necessarily resilient. The ends may be porous or weakened even when the roots appear strong.

Can a straightening treatment be applied to chemically relaxed hair?

Combining techniques can increase the risk of breakage. You need to know which product has already been used, check for incompatibilities and carry out a strand test. Never automatically apply a straightening treatment to the full length of chemically relaxed hair.

What maintenance is required?

In both cases, choose gentle washing, suitable treatments and heat protection. After chemical relaxing, pay particular attention to the boundary between natural regrowth and the treated lengths. After Brazilian straightening, the routine should preserve softness and limit repeated heat exposure.

How do you decide?

  • Choose Brazilian straightening for a more adaptable, temporary result.
  • Choose chemical relaxing for a very straight, permanent result.
  • Postpone the technique if the hair is brittle, gummy or highly sensitised.
  • Always carry out a diagnosis and strand test before the full application.

FAQ

Is Brazilian straightening a chemical relaxer?

No. The two techniques do not work in the same way, and Brazilian straightening is generally not permanent.

Can you return to natural hair after chemical relaxing?

The natural texture returns with regrowth. The relaxed sections remain transformed and must gradually be cut off if you want to return to completely natural hair.

Which technique is less demanding?

Brazilian straightening often offers a more gradual transition, but its maintenance depends on the desired result. Chemical relaxing requires precise management of regrowth.
